My cousins found this while walking south of the Iberostar Playa Paraíso resort (near Playa del Carmen, on the Riviera Maya in Mexico). Just past the unfinished neighboring complex, where the shore takes a bend to the west, is this phenomenon. We think it's a freshwater spring bubbling up from underwater. A reasonable guess considering the proliferation of cenotes in this area, but we can't be sure. (One cousin was thinking of tasting it to be sure, but didn't want to fall in and didn't want to get sick — good move!)
I do know that when I was snorkeling at Akumal, we swam back through some unexpectedly cold water, and our guide Flavio told us that we had just gone through fresh water coming up from the shallow seabed. So I wouldn't be at all surprised if that's what this was. One of the cooler things I saw in Mexico.
