Don Shepperd gives an introduction and a short reading from the book "Misty: First Person Stories of the F-100 Fast FACs in the Vietnam War". Don was a "Misty" in Vietnam, retired from the USAF as a 2-Star General, and edited the book. This video was shot near Don's home in Tucson, AZ.

  • Great book! Just got it a few days ago and am fascinated. You guys were brave! My late mother had spoken of my late father's 100 missions flown in Vietnam years ago and my older brother recently told me dad was a Misty and got shot down, but quickly was rescued to return to flying. I have no memory of these events as I was only 8yo at that time. Dad's name is not in the book, perhaps he was only "connected" in some way with Misty. I suppose I'll never know, but this is a fantastic book!

  • @scatterplot0805 -hanks for writing. Tell me your father's name and I'll do a little research - glad you enjoyed the book - Don Shepperd -

  • crewdawgf16 - thanks for reading the books and your comment - it was an interesting time of life in a difficult war. We had neither the equipment, knowledge, strategy nor tactics to deal with the enemy we faced, so we just did dumb things that were later termed heroic - in the process we lost many lives and airplanes. Only later did I come to realize how sad was our plight as a nation, an Air Force, and as Mistys - Don Shepperd

  • Thanks for your comment - I flew with heroes but any heroism on my part was entirely inadvertent - Don Shepperd, co-author Bury us Upside Down

  • Misty is a collection of first person stories from the Misty FACs - I could write a book about writing the book - this was a wild, cantankerous and rebellious group that have not become any easier to deal with in their 60s, 70s and 80s as I attempted to gather their stories - flying combat was sometimes easier by comparison - Don Shepperd

  • B. - glad you are enjoying the book - however, I assure you any heroism on my part was entirely inadvertant - Don Shepperd

  • @shepdonald Hello. Thanks, yes it would be good to know what dad flew and which squadron. Dad talked a lot of F105's and F100's. His name was Lt. Col. Howard J. Browning. His time in Vietnam was 1969 and 1970. Thanks again!

  • I've read both this book and "Bury Us Upside Down" many times during my countless missions over Iraq and the Stan. Simply put, you're a bunch of heroes, and I'm sure there are many like me that are beyond envious. A big thank you to all of the Mistys.

  • Sir,

As soon as I finished "MISTY" I picked up "Bury us Upside Down," which I finished tonight. Both books were recommended to me by my flight commander from the B-Course at Luke. He was right, I was not able to put either of these books down!

Thank you for your service and for sharing the MISTY story.

  • Great Book. I just finished.
