THE DESERT ROSE IS A SUCCULENT FROM DRY ARID REGIONS IN AFRICA. IT HAS A WIDE BASE THAT IS VERY APPEALING VISUALLY, GROWING EASILY INDOORS AND OUTSIDE. WE TAKE A SPECIMEN AND MAKE IT INTO A BONSAI.
AS AN ADDITIONAL NOTE, MY BOOK ONTHE SPHAGNUM MOSS METHOD HAS BEEN SENT TO THE PUBLISHER. IT HAS IN ITS ROUGH FORM 407 PAGES AND 264 ILLUSTRATIONS AND PHOTOS. IT WILL BE A NUMBER OF MONTHS BEFORE IT IS READY FOR PUBLICATION, BUT I WILL KEEP YOU INFORMED AS TO ITS PROGRESS AND LET YOU KNOW WHEN PRE-PUBLICATION ORDERS CAN BE PLACED. IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR COPY INSCRIBED AND SIGNED, I WILL EXPLAIN HOW THAT CAN BE DONE ONCE WE GET CLOSER TO THE PUBLICATION DATE.

  • you're adeniums are going ot die. all i have to say.

  • Would you please be so kind to back up your statement with a reasoned explanation. I would like to know why you believe as you do. I believe the opposite, but I am open to hear what you have to say. Dr. Levitt

  • @MatthewDLG Succulents will die very very easy in spagnum mos because they need little to no watter

  • Hi Matt, You can keep the watering at a minimum. We will see what happens. Thanks for your explanatory email about the situation. It was most informative. We will keep an eye on the Adenium. I have other succulents that do extremely well in the sphagnum moss. Jerry

  • with bonsai 's isn't there a size balance between the leaf size and the size of th bonsai that you are trying to keep? for example you would not want a catalpa tree in a 4" height tree? wouldn't a mimosa tree be a better choice for that size tree? the larger leaf would go in a 6' size tree better?

i really enjoy the advice and material you have for everyone. keep up the great work, we can tell its a love for your art that you have!!

  • Hi, Yes, the idea of a proportionate sized leaf to the size of the bonsai is a goal of the art. You can control leaf size by constantlly pruning the larger leaves which will in time give you a smaller leaf size on your plant. A lot of people try to find trees with naturally small leaves to get this effect, such as a black olive of Florida. I have a mimosa and papayas with much smaller leaves than on a full sized plant. It is because of the small container restricting the root growth. Jerry

  • @MatthewDLG I've grown one like this for years and it's fine. I did kill a rosemary bonsai this way however, but was not very experienced then.

  • Do you have any videos on growing desert roses from seed? I live in central Fl and mine produced some pods and I collected the seeds. It late november 2011 now. When would it be a good time to germenate and plant? Also do you have a special way of germenating them? thanks alot your videos are very helpful.

  • To Jerry or any experienced viewers, I bought a DR with a VERY tall trunk, above halfway up was a ring of new roots starting to descend, I cut the trunk in half just bellow these new roots so that they now reach the soil and the base of the plant is much shorter. was this a bad move? I'm worried the damage will over take the plant.

  • i love this video. i just bought my first bonsai (desert rose) . i hope i will be able to take care of it.

  • @bonsai9723 i agree, i have a baby jady bonsai that i have in spagnum moss and it is growing wonderfully. I also live in florida and sphagnum works great for all my bonsais here and you were the one to give me the idea...thx.

  • What!? My Desert Rose is blooming in Winter in Texas!

  • Keep me posted about the book please. I would like to get it.
