    Actually, Alexander Muir himself edited one line of the song (and even claimed it was his original version later) after the same comment occurred in the 19th century. His edited (or original line) was:

    And joined in love together,

    The lilly, thistle, shamrock, rose

    The maple leafe forever

    See, he just swapped entwine for lilly, which is a fair compromise for the French, and for keeping the tradition of the song.
