A good video game is one that can totally immerse you in its world. Although its a combination of many things that create this immersion, in large part its due to the game's soundtrack. If there are any particular areas in a video game that stand out to you, chances are its because of the music. Over the next few weeks I'll attempt to pick songs that I think really exemplify this trait. Note: I define atmospheric by how much a role the song plays in setting the mood/ambiance of the location or environment, ie. if you can hear the song by itself and it immediately takes you back to that part of the game.

First up is "Dark World", the overworld theme in Final Fantasy 6 after *SPOILER* the world gets destroyed. The haunting notes and the incessant blowing wind are almost too much, and I really cant listen to it that often just because it is so depressing. When I hear this song the words doom, gloom, and despair keep repeating in my head. "Dark World" does an amazing job of creating the post-apocalyptic world of ruin, and now that I think about it, this track could easily have made both my scariest and my saddest song countdowns.

  • I find this even more atmospheric when you go back to Narshe for the first time. The music doesn't change and there's absolutely nobody (except the old man).

  • I think this theme gives a similar sense of desolation when compared to the overworld theme in 2300 AD in Chrono Trigger. They both have the blowing wind theme and a very depressing melody.

  • I remember... When I was younger, this song somehow scared me... I had to mute the tv to be able to play further. This song gave me nightmares.

  • @limegreensquid Ruined World for Chrono Trigger is just like this one. Check that one out as well.

  • this one is #1

  • Oh, damn ... i remember this. Any music that starts with a lot of whipping wind noise chills me to the bone. When you travel forward in time in Ocarina, the beginning of Pink Floyd's "Meddle" album (got around the same time, hehe, which made it even creepier). But yah. This song really put the hopeless atmosphere in the game. Fucking brilliant composer for such a fucking brilliant game.

  • Captures hopelessness almost too perfectly
