This is my guide which shows how to effectively finish your Spiritual Mages task.
Spiritual Mages can be killed in the God Wars Dungeon. Each faction has their own Spiritual Mages, but the Zamorak Mages are closely spaced in the location shown. Alternatively, you can kill the Saradomin Mages in either the main area or in the saradomin encampment. If the mage is engaged in combat with another monster from another faction already, you can attack the mage and it won't retaliate back against you unless the monster it's killing dies.
To get to the God Wars Dungeon, the best way is to use the trollheim teleport. This requires 61 magic to cast. If you are on lunar spells and have spellbook swap, you can change to the regular spellbook. If you don't have the required level or aren't on regular spells then you'll have to run to God Wars from Burthorpe (not advised).
Using protection from magic with prayer armour is HIGHLY recommended for this task. The Mages use an extremely accurate magic attack that will hit often even with very high magic defence. If you want to, a high levelled healing familiar could be able to sustain your health loss provided you have high magic defence, but using prayer is much easier and safer.
It is HIGHLY recommended to bring at least a Saradomin and a Zamorak item into the God Wars dungeon (so that these factions aren't aggressive). You shouldn't really encounter any Armadyl or Bandos monsters (unless you get lost in the Dungeon) so those items aren't required.
Some good choices for items are:
Saradomin/Zamorak arrow - Very cheap and takes up position in the ammo slot, which won't affect your stats as this isn't used anyway. (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
Saradomin Owl - Used as a Saradomin item but only works when summoned. Will not work if stored in inventory. Must be fed with Fishing Bait. (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
Zamorak Hawk - Used as a Zamorak item but only works when summoned. Will not work if stored in inventory. Must be fed with Fishing Bait. (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
Saradomin/Zamorak Stole - takes away some strength and offence stats but gives +10 prayer.
Saradomin/Zamorak Bracers - takes away offence stats.
Unholy Book - Used as a Zamorak item and takes away some bonuses in shield slot.
Holy Book - Used as a Saradomin item and takes away more bonuses in the shield slot.
Saradomin Sword - Used as a Saradomin item and is a good choice as long as you don't unequip it.
Zamorak Spear - Used as a Zamorak item and is fairly good as long as you don't unequip it.
If you are new to the God Wars Dungeon, you might want to bring Armadyl and Bandos items as well so that none of the monsters will be intrinsically aggressive to you, but you are probably better off teleporting out if you get lost.

Why don't you pick up combo runes?
SuperRedNova 6 months ago
@SuperRedNova I usually only pick up the mud runes, as I have a space for those in my bank. The others, like dust and mist, don't have a space in my bank and I can't be bothered going to the grand exchange to sell them after task. I'm just lazy.
