unfortunately, the original artist who created this song cannot be traced, and no one's really sure how old it is, but the 1st recordings of it were from the early 1930s...

it was made popular especially by The Animals, but also Woodie Guthrie, Nina Simone, and Bob Dylan...Muse has recently come out with a cover of this tune as well...

i like myself a story about a tragic life....i suppose that feeling low can be sort of a high...

The House of the Rising Sun - Lyrics

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new bluejeans
My father was a gamblin' man
Down in New Orleans

Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk

Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm goin' back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain

Oh mother tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun

  • I was a teenage punk in the 70's.My sister was on the road singing in a band for a living.she visited and I wanted to show her how cool I was,so I made her listen to Eric Bourdan sing this.imagine my surprise when she batted her eyes and told me it was an old tune written by a girl about a whorehouse.suddenly the lyrics made a lot more sense.i felt so ignorant.years later i discovered Pink Floyd.same deal. They used to be a punk band in the late 50's she said.Anyway,God Bless.thanx4daTunes.

  • Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. I'll now be checking your channel for originals.

  • Hell yea you killed that. Nice job!

  • Really wonderful. What's with the 21 people who didn't like this? Great cover.

  • @MotorSickler your some what off. your sister was talking about Georgia Turner. in fact the oldest is Clarence Ashley. the sad thing is the song is from 1800 and the authorship is unknown. so in fact you cant say it's about the Storyville or a whorehouse.

  • "i suppose that feeling low can be sort of a high..." = poetry
