On Monday, September 22, 1969, after sitting out the first half of a late-season game against the expansion San Diego Padres, 38-year old living legend Willie Mays is called on to pinch hit by Giants manager Clyde King, in hopes of pulling out a desperately needed win, as the first-place Giants try to hold on to a half-game lead over the charging Atlanta Braves. With the score tied 2-2 in the 7th inning, Mays connects for a home run, the 600th of his career, giving the Giants a desperately needed 4-2 victory.
