three seconds...

that's how little time officers Jeffrey Webb and Mark "Joe" Fisher had to react on Oct. 12, 2011, when Paul J. Spencer jumped out of his crashed Cadillac near Lafayette Country Club and stabbed Officer Ron Dombkowski in the face...

according to Deputy Chief Dave Payne, Officer Webb and Officer Fisher fired a combined 10 gunshots in two seconds at Spencer from their duty weapons....

six of those bullets struck Spencer's left arm, right arm, groin, chest and twice in the lower back -- fatally wounding the 39-year-old Lafayette man...

"stabbing someone in the head and face is attempted murder of somebody....in essence, he's trying to murder a police officer in this situation...the intent is inherent in that they (Officer Webb and Officer Fisher) see it happening....as police officers, we look at that...is deadly force needed to stop this action??? in this case, yes it was -- because of the means, the opportunity and intent of the suspect", Chief Don Roush said...

the four-year veteran, Officer Webb, and Fisher who is a 10-month veteran still going through training, can now return to work, but they must first go through debriefing, and that process takes as long as each officer needs, according to Capt. Kurt Wolf....

Chief Roush said Officer Dombkowski, who was hospitalized for about 34 hours, is in "good spirits" and recovering well....
