From their Debutalbum ´The Awakening`1980
with Dexter Redding on Bass

sorry for the poor soundquality it´s converted from an old grey record

but credit where credit is due this is the original version.
27 years old and still being used by bassplayers to market themselves
Just goes to show what a great song this is !

The Reddings comprised of:
Dexter Redding (bass and vocals)
Otis Redding III (guitar)
and Mark Locket (piano, drums and lead vocals)

The Reddings were a trio, two of whom were the sons of the late Otis Redding.

The third member was their cousin Mark Locket who pitched in on keyboards and drums.
Vocalist / bassist Dexter and guitarist Otis Redding II teamed up with Locket in 1980 on their debut album The Awakening

The Awakening 1980
Class 1981
Steamin' Hot 1982
Back To Basics 1983
If Looks Could Kill 1985
The Reddings 1988

Their biggest hit was 'Remote Control,' a number six R & B single in 1980.

  • Kax 61 you're right! Les deserves respect but I bet the kids think that Les wrote this one. Claypool rules but Dexter Redding is the man!

  • The original (this) is way better.

  • @themeeting ur mom has no soul or flavor

  • I HAVE THE VINYL-ORG.1ST RELEASE lp 2x......one is to buy!!

  • @kax61 Dude, fuck off. Seriously, Les is awesome, Redding is awesome. Les made a rockin' rendition of the song, Redding made a rocking original.

  • Bought the cd last november. Great track !!!!!!!!!!

  • dexter was bad

  • Agreed. This is apparently a song that Les liked and has been a part part of his own inspiration. I don't see any reason why he could not, or would not bring this tune to people's attention. It isn't as if tons of people have heard of this tune. I never heard of it until I heard Les play it. And, I would not have sought out the original without first hearing it from Les. At least he is giving homage to something that most people would either forget, or never hear in the first place.

  • I don't think Les is trying to rip anyone off. I think he enjoys exposing people to things they haven't heard before. I personally had never heard this before Les did it and I thoroughly enjoy both versions for what they are.

  • Les Claypool plays it wrong and his version has no soul or flavor. Wack.

  • LES LES LES is LESS LESS LESS! This is Dexter Redding!!! Power Bass Player! who happened to write this tune that Les is Copying! Let's not for gorget to give credit where credit is due.. Please!

  • IMO Les does this better, but one must always respect the creator. I just prefer Les' style, this version is a little more Afrotonic rofl (nothing wrong with that I can understand if you think that makes this better version) which can be good, but for this one solo I gotta give it to Les because he improvs more in depth than as heard here (more harmonics here, less crazy slap)

Please don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about haha I've played bass for the last 5 years
