GOLD - Sebastian Coe, GBR 3:32.53
SILVER - Steve Cram, GBR 3:33.40
BRONZE - José Abascal, ESP 3:34.30

Coe wins his second consecutive Olympic 1500 meter final and gestures toward the British press after the race. I was in the stands that day and it took me a few seconds to realize who he was angry at. Marty Liquori picked it up quickly for ABC.

BTW, I was sitting about 5 seats away from Don King, who insisted on turning around and waving small American flags all day, even if nothing was going on.

This is not the full race. ABC cut away to a Dwight Stones high jump attempt at one point. And half of the second to last lap is missing. My dad taped these races and he has a quick impatient trigger for anything beyond 400 meters. :)

  • @gav800 Yes indeed. Coe's still the only man to have gone sub 1:42 and sub 3:30. If you add up all athletes' fastest 800 & 1500 times, he's still got the quickest overall combined time ever. And that was from running on slightly slower tracks 30 years ago!

  • 30 years later and IMO, Coe's still the greatest 800/1500 runner ever (El G & Kipketer better in each, but not over both).

  • According to GQ, the subtitles at 3:10 would read: "Who says I'm f***king finished?"

  • Jeez, that extra gear coming off the last bend....

  • By the way, does anyone know if there is a video of the missing part of the 2nd lap?, it's my favorite part cause it's a niceclose up shot of Coe just cruising so easily.

  • Yeah, Coe would probably have won going ahead at 2 laps to go -- but why give up his bigger advantage, that being his quick acceleration from speed. Cram pulled away from Abascal, yet Coe made it look like Cram didn't kick -- The field spread out so Coe didn't have to go to the front for danger of getting tangled up. Shame about Scott,

  • In his biography, Coe said he felt so relaxed and good with 2 laps to go, that for a moment he toyed with the idea of hitting the front himself and running flat out. He decided not to, believing his kick would be good enough, but believes he could have run under 3:30 if he had! That would have required a last 800m of 1:47.3! Incredible.

  • I love the "pointing" at 3:04. Coe is my new favorite runner!
