This is a series of exercises to learn the standard layback Kayak roll. Starting at the end of the Roll and progressing to the point that The roll can finally be dove without being disorienting.

Use the same movement with the hip as when doing a Salsa Dance.... the paddle is mostly there as a balance point and for slight amount to brace off.... the slower and more sultry the salsa hip movement, the slower the roll

Each step should be practiced until You are comfortable before moving to the next step. End with diving the roll. Practice all the same steps for both sides.

The series is done showing both the Greenland and the Euro paddle being used....The paddle used doesn't matter , the roll is done the same with either..

  • Thanks for posting. This video has been very helpful the last year learning and teaching others. You look like a normal version of Dubside. :) appreciate the footage.

  • The purpose of a kayak roll is to right yourself when you are in a dire situation. Learning to kayak roll that involves leaning on the back deck does two things, 1. Creates bad habits and 2. Leaves your vital parts like your face and chest exposed when you lay on on your back deck.

I agree this video is a great way of getting people to visualize the roll but practicing this roll particularly by yourself will hard. If you can do it, good for you but to be safe, get an instructor to teach you

  • Very good way of teachingh people. Ill try that for my friend who is jus starting out!

  • Hi Roy! I am just getting into Sea Kayaking and was wondering what your Tuilik is made of? I live in the Northwest and will be making my own and wondered what the best material is for up here in cold water conditions.
