Open Source is Linux? no way Linux is Open Source.

Open Source has it's own definition.

OSX is based on Next Step a company was build by Steve Jobs. Witch later is based on Open BSD but also x windows.

I never said that OSX has to be open source or freeware.

And there is also the Darwin Project witch is open source but based on OSX

heres the thing linux is based off of unix and OSX is based off of unix, linux is an open source this equals free, so OSX is based off of unix which should be free, your paying for an open source that sould be free becasue unix is an open source.

Wrong Linux is based on Mimix witch was a version for school (UNIX variant). UNIX is not free. OSX is UNIX compliance and POSIX. You should better inform yourself.

I personally use Windows and Linux on the same machine, and I'd say that with Linux on here, it eliminates majority of the flaws with Linux, and I have Windows for apps that can't run on WINE, so I have the best of both worlds. I'd much rather use Linux and Windows than just Mac OS X or Mac OS X with Linux, but having all 3 wouldn't be so bad

@defores just for clarification Linux, as a kernel is mostly open source software with a small amount of closed source binary drivers only used when there is not an opensource alternative in place. Mostly becuase certain harware manufacturers like to be belligerent. other than that it Is not "BASED" off of Unix or Minix. It was made to replace minix and to be Unix-like.

And for darwin..... Well its basically what happens when you inbreed alot of netbsd with a little frebsd code.

Open source means that the source code is available to the public but it has nothing to do with the price.. Freeware on the other hand is free of charge, but not necessary open source...

Linux (the kernel) and GNU (open source) are two different projects. Yes, linux was released under the GPL, but so have other kernels. GNU started out as utilities that can easily be modified and compiled, which means they can be modified to run on any operating system, not just linux.
