I like this. . . but some people who are just not as good as her bash because they do not have anything to do. Really, I do not know if anyone has told you guys this nor has anyone ever told me, but to tell someone that he/she is a terrible singer is a really vile thing to say. As my mom says if you have nothing good to say don't say it. Plus this is a voice recital! Not the actual play.
@broadwaybaby1986 really....? you're making a comment that she doesn't fit the part because she's not black?
It doesn't matter at all what color their skin is because if you're have a good voice and can support the story of the song with your facial emotional choices, then your skin color doesn't matter.
I don't understand all of you. This is her voice recital and yes, she has a very nice voice. Good technique that helps her through all of her songs. However, if you're not going to sing in the "broadway style" as others have mentioned, don't sing well-known broadway songs. They are acting songs, which you are not doing while you sing. Stick to voice pieces such as classical to show off your technique.
I'm sorry... I have to disagree... While I do think that she did a wonderful job with singing technique, I think criticizing an original artist for creating a "basis" voice for the character Ti Moune and interpreting the song in her own way is a little harsh... I think she's a wonderful vocalist and her success proves that others think so also... Just saying, but I do agree with you on some thoughts about this girl's performance.
You sound great - I'm sorry, but I totally disagree with the people who are criticizing you; you're not really singing it in a "classical style" at all, you're just singing it with good technique, which LaChanze in the original cast recording certainly doesn't have; she sings everything completely straight-tone, and she sings flat, and in this song she sounds like she's yelling/screaming the entire time. Yours is a lot more pleasant to listen to
you're singing this in a classical style (sort of) in supposed to be more broadway- meaning that it is supposed to be more of a spoken song. The vibrato doesn't go with the song, though it would for some other piece. You hit all the notes right, but you might have wanted to add a little passion and subtract all that vibrato.

Good voice, but you don't fit the part at all. This character is a very dark skinned individual. Plus vocally it didn't match.
To compare- It's like Julie Andrews singing Single Ladies or something- not that you sound like Julie, just a comparison. Ya know?
