This is a clip from the opening of a series of films Marie-Louise von Franz made in 1985 with her student, the Canadian filmmaker Fraser Boa. In it she explains her understanding of the subconscious and dreaming. In the whole series there are 20 films in which Von Franz tackles different topics in response to issues raised in filmed interviews with the public. These fall into 4 sections: Introduction to Archetypal Symbolism: Men's Dreams: Women's Dreams: Relationships & End of Life issues. Additionally there are 5 commentaries by Fraser Boa's brother, the analytical psychologist Marion Woodman, who has produced these published DVDs, in which she expands & clarifies certain concepts in the films.
The boxed set of 4 DVDs is available from http://www.wayofthedream.com/index.html?
The series will be screened in Wiltshire England Oct 29-31 2010. See http://msteer.co.uk/edu/3Dream2.html

  • Any chance of finding/seeing this film in Toronto Canada.

Are they/will they be available in DVD?

  • I cant answer that. Keep hunting!

The films were transferred to DVD & marketed by the Marion Woodman Foundation - she is Frazer Boa's sister. I was fortunate enough to get one of the thousand that were pressed. But I understand they do not intend to reprint. I can only assume there is a © issue, because they sold out in a matter of months. I intend to place a few more clips in the public domain, when I have a moment. Von Franz's Canadian publisher Innercitybooks might have more info.

  • If you appreciate this topic check out a book by Viola Pettit Neal calld Through the Curtain. It is fascinating.

  • Thanks. On your recommendation I bought this book, but Im afraid it didnt really speak to my current stage of life. Perhaps it would have done if I was at the beginning of my inner exploration 30 years ago, and Im sure theyd help others in that stage: but I found the objectification of the inner spiritual world into 'personalities' & semi-concrete entities somewhat dated.

It was doubtless valuable then, but I feel that Von Franz offers a more accurate picture of the fluidity of the subconscious.

Thank you very much! I will check with Innercitybooks and also with the Marion Woodman Foundation and post anything positive here.

    Thanks again!

  • @Willowtable that I couldn't quite understand for it wasn't just a dream and was led to Neale's book shortly after that time. It was for me a revelation. I cannot say I know much about Von Franz but I am willing to learn more. I'm pulled toward the science of DMT and the stuff that leads to the spirit and then ...well who knows really. I appreciate your sharing this woman with us. I wouldn't have seen her otherwise I don't suppose and it's a topic I don't think people consider important.

  • @maxwellsteer Point taken. Aplogies if for steering you toward something that wasn't useful to you at this time. I find I follow my intuition a lot and when I find a suggestion here or there in my awakened state if it speaks to me in a way that I don't pass over it then I understand to explore it further. What I got from Neale's book about the inner journey leading to the outter bodies and planes of existence where knowledge resides and convenes was helpful to me. I've had an astral exp.
