Allesandro Scarlatti (1660-1725)

Cantata pastorale per la nascita di Nostro Signore:
O di Betlemme altera povertà
Aria: 'L'Autor d'ogni mio bene'

One late seventeenth-century opera composer towers above the rest. While the genius of the Sicilan born Allesandro Scarlatti has been somewhat eclipsed by that of his extraordinary son, Domenico, in his day he was one of the greatest musical celebrities in Europe. Born in Palermo into a musical family, he was despatched off to Rome while stille a boy to study possibly with Carissimi. While he was there his first opera attracted the attention of the exiled Queen Christina of Sweden, who appointed him musical director of her private theater. More successes followed, and the remainder of Allesandro's working life was spent in an upward spiral of ever more prestigious musical posts in Rome and in Naples - a city which he can firmly claim to have put on the musical map of Europe.

Allesandro Scarlatti was an exceptionally prolific composer in an age of prolific composers, with at least 114 operas and some 500 small-scale chamber cantatas to his credit. A pastorale Christmas cantata he wrote, 'O di Betlemme', contains a lovely aria sung by Mary to her mewborn son that shows him to be a great master of vocal style, with its soothing melodic lines and sensitive setting of Italian verse. It is a miniature masterpiece, and a textbook example of that newly evolved musical sandwich the da camp aria.
