Michigan State University hoophouse specialist Adam Montri explains how to make the most from these passive solar greenhouses. In this first installment (of three), featured on Sustainable Farmer.com, Montri explains his use of foamboard insulation along part of the hoophouse. He also talks about the costs of running the hoophouse, as well as marketing strategies.

  • Wow thank you i wasn't expecting such a fast response..Thank you! I wanted to mention I saw a guy putting up a hoop-house but using wood post. What are your thoughts about that? in the islands it would be really cost effective if we went that route. Oh yes and in the spring and hurricane season we get heavy rains, so we are leaning towards using the technique,

  • @iGotemApp You should email admontri@msu.edu about construction - he's the hoophouse specialist at MSU. He may be slow getting back to you because he's so busy but he would be the real expert on construction

  • Have you experimented at all with "cold traps?" I guess they are channels in the ground (like under the walkway) where the cold air can collect rather than on the plants
