In this 1957 recording, twenty-year old Vladimir Ashkenazy performs the Mephisto Waltz, S.514, by Franz Liszt. I created this music video from the LP shown above, released to the public in the USA in 1959 as Ashkenazy was making his debut tour of the United States. This LP -- with other works by Liszt, as well as Rachmaninov and Prokofiev, was only the second album recorded by the pianist.

So that there is no question in the mind of the listener, I rely principally on images of the the LP and LP jacket in order to document the authenticity of historically important recordings such as these.

  • oh gosh.. ive been here for an hour o.O

  • The young Ashkenazy was a frightening pianist

  • He nailed it ... no better interpretation than this !

  • The greatest pianist ever...!!

  • Dear God.

  • Absolutely Incredible performance! Today's show-boating pianists could learn alot from this! now, If only Martha Argerich had recorded it....

  • Wow! I heard this in my teens and most others sounded a bit slow after that. Amazingly Askenazy claimed he disliked Liszt, only learnt it for his conservatoire profs, and renounced playing Liszt later on.And there is something a bit hasty-to-get-it-over in this, also delighting in his piano-sportsman abilities! The dreaded leaps are astonishing of energy, rythm&precision.Pity he renounced a lot of his fire&passion later.Truly would have been a legend if he'd continued in this vein.

  • i love later ashkenazy recordings as well, but this is truly something else!

  • I bought this recording when it first came out, 1957 or so. Not long after this, the young Ashkenazy appeared at the old Ambassador Auditorium in downtown LA. He strode out onto the stage in what looked like a suit from Soviet tailors. But his artistry was amazing. He played Prokofiev Sonata #6, inter alia. I have been an Ashkenazy fan ever since.

  • Excellent recording! In his initial years, Ashkenazy still had fire..
