GREAT historical summary! Thank you for sharing this. We tell this story at the "House of Flags Museum" in Columbus, North Carolina (the ONLY House of Flags Museum in America!) and some still don't believe it. See our "House of flags museum" You Tube posting.

HOGWASH!. In the western theater, most CSA flags of the Virgina pattern were rectangular, with proportions that varied from 1:1.2 to 1:1.7 (How 'bout looking at the originals in state museums, Yankee!) The "modern" flag with a 1:1.66 proportion first appeared in the 1890s as companies filled demand for flags by veteran groups and heritage societies such as the UDC. ( See a 48"x72" manufactured flag on p.492 of Confederate Veteran, 1917, Vol 25, issue 11.) 1950's racism had no part in it.

What is interesting as well is that the state of Mississippi, Alabama, and maybe Georgia have a confederate battle flag in their state flags, even to this day.

This was cool thanks. I don't have a rectangular one. Just a square.
Sheldon Cooper brought me here ...

That was a wonderful lecture Dr. Clemens. I as a teacher of American History applaud your informative and accurate lecture on that piece of controversy. Thank you for taking your time to make this video.
