The black background helps a lot. Later, you can use it in any video that you want by chroma keying out the black! :D

You could use noice generators to do this in Sony Vegas.

Good tutorial, but one problem. In the movies, the spell sort of spreads out and diffuses. In yours, it kinda sucks back into itself.

this is very helpful and i just wanna no what is the program u use

it think there's too much glow in your comp

The first time I watched this I was like O_O there's no way I'mma be able to do that, it looked so difficult. But now that I just went ahead and did it, (and did it pretty well) I was almost as excited as when Skyrim came out. THANK YOU so much for these tutorials. You have no idea how much these help me. I'm doing a HUGE high school graduation project and I'm making a short Harry Potter fan film for part of it. and I'm following your tutorials for the bulk of my effects. Again thanks so much!!

ffs so annoying your screen is jumping

I'd also add environmental glow to your subject from the spell to really sell the effect. If you notice in the clip with Snape, his face and hands lights up. You can easily a do this yourself by masking out the subject's face and arms and adding a curves adjustment. Just thought I'd offer my two cents to help aspiring vfx artists :)

@VFXCoach Im having the same problem as MrIDONTDONAMES, i do all the keyframes for masking, making the size increase for the middle keyframe and decrease for the last keyframe but when i play through it then, they all stay the same size as the first keyframe, please help!!!

It's actually a charm...lol
Hello. This is a great tutorial, but I have a problem. During the part where you are supposed to change the size of the mask, I made the key frames and changed the size. However, the size did not stay with only one of them - it changed the whole amount of them. I tried changing the key frames and redoing it, but that did not work. Please help!!

@MrIDONTDONAMES Ok. I see a couple of you are having this problem, but I am still unclear as to what is going on. Are you saying that you make te keyframes and adjust the size and it changes the size in all of them? If so, here are a couple of fixes:
Make sure you make one keyframe at a time. Start by selecting the stopwatch where the mask expansion should begin. That is your first keyframe. Move forward to where your maximum point of expansion will be, and dbl click on one of the mask points..

@VFXCoach then drag the mask out until it has expanded. That is your second keyframe. Move forward again to where the mask should disappear and follow the same procedure as step two, but rescale the mask inwards so it gets smaller. Hope that helps.

Hi! Awesome tutorial but you need to fix your recording software. The screen blinks
when your moving the mouse and doing things. This makes everything harder to see. I have watched this on my iphone and computer, the blinks still occurs

@Xfasid yes it is the recording software. I'll be upgrading to Camtasia or Screenflow very soon.
