@khalil4ulove You validated my point and we are in agreement, Hallie sang only gospel and then pop ("Songs of Faith and Inspiration [Columbia Records] and "Sunrise, Sunset" [Harmony/Columbia Records]; this, after the (1) abortive blues/jazz recording her first husband "forced" her to do, which Hallie point blank refused ever to do again. Hallie used her blues influence to the hilt which is why her Apollo Records material made her famous. No despair, only "The World's Greatest Gospeil Singer."
@KojiRecords No, No, No.... Mahalia always gave praise to God!!!!! She said Blues is the songs of despair. However, she wasn't a fool... she used Blues' influence along with Opera and folk to give the world a "joyful noise".
@victor63 Mahalia Jackson was a great BLUES singer who sang GOSPEL. Her main influence was Bessie Smith, the world's greatest blues singer; "Hallie" wrote in her autobiography that she sang with Bessie's records and learned her vocal technique from Bessie. Hallie's "Prayer Changes Things" (Apollo Records)was a hard gosel blues masterpiece that could have been sung by Bessie.
I know Mahalia Jackson is essence of what gospel music is all about, I'v never heard gospel music sung to well. She's always right on target, she's a natural born singer.
Gospel song that gets right to the point....God Bless all!!!!!!!!

I love the " dirty" quality of this song. She makes it sound like a blues song and that is incredible.

I heard the 1961 version, and they suggested this later copy. I'm very grateful for the post.
