Film: Hoop Dreams
Directed by Steve James
United States (1994)
Documentary: Sports/Social Issues
17 parts/165 mins

WARNING: Film contains some adult language and adult situations (Rated PG13 by MPAA)

Synopsis:

The celebrated documentary from director Steve James, Hoop Dreams follows two young boys trying to take their basketball game from the inner-city streets of Chicago to the NBA. We see them progress through their entire high school basketball careers and into their early college years, all the while tackling issues endemic to inner city youth: racism, academic exploitation, poverty, absent fathers, and gang life. And as such the film stands out as a complex and astute examination of the African-American experience. With the all-powerful image of Michael Jordan presiding over the film, Hoop Dreams exposes the way in which basketball has become the dominant force in the lives of so many African-American young men, who rely on their athletic skills to rise above the poverty surrounding them in a society that values only what these boys can do on the court. The film brilliantly elucidates a journey of lost innocence where the casualties of a game mean much more than simply losing on the court. This isn't a film about sports; its a film about American life.

  • This is one of the best documentaries, even if you aren't into basketball. Arthur and William, are two examples that not all boys in the hood are bad. Arthur and William were decent, well-spoken, ambitious young black men, they both respected and loved their mothers and families. There's a lot of good boys in the ghetto, they just need some encouragement.

  • Thank you for uploading the entire Hoop Dreams on YouTube! This is one of the films let alone documentaries ever made that shies away from every single cliche and instead shows us so much more about these characters we follow for 5 years.

  • @MusicandDancing4Ever New Black money should help out in that department more. Instead of all that stupid bling, they could build schools, rec centers, hospitals, etc. They might do it, so i can't judge, but them more than anyone cause they could relate growing up rough.
