How and why a short rip fence makes it safer to rip stock on a tablesaw by reducing the risk of kickback.

  • it looks like the short fence is positioned right at the leading edge of the saw blad, is this correct?

  • @Robkat3751

Not quite. It is positioned just after the topmost tooth bites into the top of the board.

The position is not critical - anywhere after the cut takes place but before the TDC of the blade will be OK.

  • Hello Steve, great video and great idea. However, when I followed your suggestion and went to your website to download the free plans for this jig, I was disappointed to not find it there.

  • @dagboy2000

Yes, you are right, it is no longer there. My site has had a couple of revamps since then and I've never got round to finding a home for the plans. However, if you email me (you can do so from my website (it doesn't let me post emails addys here) and ask me nicely, I'll send you the PDF.

  • Really nice video. You're very easy to understand, and explain the stuff thoroughly.

Keep up the good work. :)

  • Thanks for the video, I just got my first table saw today, it came with short fence but I wasn't sure how far to have it parallel with the blade, now I know and feel happier.

  • I can't see most of what you are talking about, stay with the close-up view.

  • Hi Steve, great videos! but be advised I tried many times to go on your website and there has been always a message of error denying the connection.

    Hope is only temporary... cheers
