Volvo 7700 Hybrid bus is a two-axle city bus with hybrid power - giving you fuel savings of up to 30 percent. For the follow-up model, Volvo 7900 Hybrid bus, the savings are up to as much as 37 percent!
The hybrid bus features diesel and electric power that can operate independently of the other. The electric motor is used to start and accelerate the bus up to about 20 km/h, enabling considerable fuel savings. At higher speeds, the diesel engine takes over, while also recharging the batteries. The electric motor serves both as a motor and a generator. When the brakes are applied, the retardation energy is transmitted to charge the batteries.
i have tried this bus, and i have to say: what a piece of crap.
the diesel engine is underpowered to say the least. the electric motors are great when they work, whitch is only 9 out of 10 times, the rest of the times you have to start the diesel manually because the electric engine refuses to turn, regardless of the charge in the batteries, when they do work and they hand over the workload and start the diesel it freaks alot of the passengers out, it feels like someone pops the clutch,
