When I was stationed in Okinawa, I couldn't miss any of these events. Each village/area tried to outdo the others and it was great competitive fun. Although I got laughed at a time or two when I tried my hand at the druming and dancing, it was all in good spirits and a lot of fun. Okinawans are some of the greatest folks in the world.
In the summer all the villages in Okinawa get together to perform Eisa literally meaning the ground. They celebrate to our ancestors and the Gods for a bountiful harvest. The young men and women in the village challenge each other at the Eisa competition.
it's nice to know that some of you get off the base xD
