1952 yılında Kuzey Irlanda'nin Belfast sehrinde dogan Gary Moore, 16 yasinda Phil Lynott'la birlikte ilk önemli grubu Skid Row'u kurdu. Ancak kisa süre sonra Lynott kendi grubu Thin Lizzy'yi kurmak için ayrildi. Grubun geri kalani 1970'te Londra'ya giderek CBS Records ile anlasma imzaladi. Iki albüm yaptiktan sonra grup dagildi ve 1973 yilinda gitarist Gary Moore Band'i kurdu.
Bu arada kisa bir süre Thin Lizzy ile birlikte çalisti ve 1974'te Jon Hiseman'in caz agirlikli Colosseum II isimli grubuna katildi. John McLaughlin, Santana gibi devlerin de yer aldigi bu grupla iki albüm yaptiktan sonra, 1977'de eli sakatlanan gitarci Brian Robertson'in yerine turnede çalmak üzere Thin Lizzy'ye katildi.
Daha sonra gruptan ayrildi, Colosseum II ile bir albüm yapti ve 1978'de Robertson, Thin Lizzy'den ayrilinca onun yerine geçti.
Thin Lizzy ile Black Rose isimli albümü kaydetti. Bu arada ilk solo albümünü yayinladi. Thin Lizzy ile çiktigi turne sonrasi Los Angeles'a giderek basta Willie Dee, vokalde Tony Newton ve davulda Mark Nausseef ile G-Force isimli yeni bir grup kurdu ve bir albüm yapti.
1981'de Greg Lake Band'e katildi.
1982 yilinda solo kariyerine geri döndü. Bu kez ona vokalde Charlie Huhn, klavyede Tommy Eyre, basta Neil Murray ve davulda Ian Paice eslik ediyordu. Farkli müzisyenlerin katilimi ile gitarci, basarili kariyerini 90'larin ortalarina kadar sürdürdü.
1994 yilinda Cream elemanlari Ginger Baker ve Jack Bruce ile BBM isimli bir yan projede yer aldi.
1995'te Fleetwood Mac gitarcisi Peter Green anisina Bluesy for Green isimli çalismayi yayinladi.
1997 yilinda Dark Days in Paradise isimli pop çizgisine yakin albümü çikardi.
Gitarci son olarak 1999'da A Different Beat ile çikis yapti.
Bu uzun süre içinde Santana, Ozzy Osbourne, John McLaughlin, Phil Lynott, Greg Lake, B.B. King, Albert King, Jean Luc-Ponty gibi birçok devle birlikte çalisan Gary Moore, rock gitarinin en önemli ve basarili temsilcilerinden biri oldu.
Hard rock, caz ve blues gibi birçok degişik türlerde örnekler verdi, birçok gitarciyi etkiledi ve rock tarihine geçti.
In 1973 he released his first solo album, Grinding Stone, billed as the Gary Moore Band. In 1978 his solo career started again with help from Phil Lynott. The combination of Moore's blues-based guitar and Lynott's voice, produced "Parisienne Walkways", which reached the Top Ten in the UK Singles Chart in April 1979; and the Thin Lizzy number two hit album, Black Rose: A Rock Legend.
After a series of rock records, Moore returned to blues music with Still Got the Blues, with contributions from Albert King, Albert Collins and George Harrison. The album was well received by fans and a huge success. Moore stayed with the blues format until 1997, when he decided to experiment with modern dance beats on Dark Days in Paradise; this left many fans, as well as the music press confused. Back to the Blues saw Moore return to his tried and tested blues format in 2001, then continued by Power of the Blues (2004), Old New Ballads Blues (2006), Close As You Get (2007) and his most recent album Bad For You Baby (2008).
