I wonder, after 6 weeks in a tumbler, would the material be near the consistency of dirt, and free from odor? (All other conditions being ideal.)

@BooKittyRadley It actually only takes a few weeks depending on conditions, but when it is finished it is the consistency of of loamy rich soil and has no odor.

dear grandpadavis, thanks for sharing yur great work. I'm from Phil. n just been made aware of the wonder of composting by a friend who is into strictly organic farming. More than planting composting just gripped my mind. Last nite I slept late because Ive been thinking how to make a composting tumbler. yur idea is simple n possible to make. but just wonder why didnt you put ventilation or draining holes on your drum. are they not needed to come up with good compost? - jean sy

@zxsyjean sorry it's taken so long to reply (busy summer) but if you watch carefully I mentioned, kind of quicky, that I drilled holes in the tumbler to aid in the ventalation. The secret to fast composting is areobic composting. Non-areobic composting takes much longer, sometimes up to a year, but areobic composting is much faster. So, keep tumbling ever day or so and you will have a nice pile of compost in three to four weeks.

Nice job on your tumbler. Recycling stuff you already have on hand is an excellent idea. Do you compost throught the winter as well with like house scraps and such?

Raise the base another foot and a half and you won't have to dig it out, just pour out.

There is one problem with this type of tumbler once they get heavy they are hard to turn & the bungees dont always hold. So if you have it around half or 3/4 full with compost it will be hard to turn.

The 55 gallon barrels I have are exactly like yours. I've been struggling with how to do the lid. I've seen one other method but it was much more tedious than yours. Thanks for that!! Also, very good job on the video!
