It's actually a larger example of a virus entering a human body. A virus invades a normal cell and changes its composition to create more viruses instead of what they're supposed to produce. A zombie would be a multi-cellular version of this, they bite you, you get infected from the saliva/blood that enters your bloodstream. Your body would then want to propagate the virus by making you want to bite other people, kind of like rabies.

@nightelfdruid24 That's a part of it. For a proper zombie virus to be created, it'd have to reprogram the mind to have an urge to attack things that moves. In fact, zombies would most likely not eat human flesh, they'd probably just bite then move on.

@98RamMagnum Exactly. If someone were to take rabies, make it much more effective (as in the host has a COMPLETELY uncontrollable urge to propagate the virus), and at least prolong the time until it's terminal, we'd have an honest to God zombie virus.
