Cuba's national ballet, one of the world's best, has turned 60. Its not a lot in ballet terms, but it is a lifetime for Cuba. 60 years ago the island was an artistic desert but its now considered to be one of the ballet capitals of the world.
It's unbelievably offensive and ignorant that anyone could claim that Cuba was an artistic desert before Castro. She's obviously following the script she's been given by the regime. Not only did Cuba have a ballet tradition long before Castro usurped the Cuban presidency, it was also a literary powerhouse in Latin America producing some of the best writers in the region as well as the best musical composers like Esteban Salas, Ignacio Cervantes, Manuel Samuell and Ernesto Lecuona.
Agreed Wolfgang, Anti-Americanism stems from the crippling jealousy the world has of the U.S. But, whenever there is a crisis and they need money we are there sending millions to feed and shelter them. The Hippocrates.Ditto the anti-cubannism in ballet. The soviets,(Yes they still are...)especially resent them with their ballet belongs to us attitude. Fact, since it's inception in 1964 Varna competition, The Cubans hold the record for most medals won. Not bad for an artistic desert!!!
I guess that it's up to people like us to set the record straight. That dismissive European attitude towards all things American borders on the sadistic. Whats more is that they forever criticize Americans for being insular and ignorant, yet that's exactly what so clearly evident in this video; a derisive attitude that seems to ask that question: Who's going to know the difference it's only Cuba. But more importantly, who cares? As you can tell, its a hot button issue for me. Sorry.
P.S.,I went to a booksigning by madame Tebaldi in New York. She asked me where I was from. I said CUBA. She says in perfect spanish:"Que lastima lo que ese tirano Castro le a hecho a la bella CUBA". "Pity what that tyrant Castro has done to the beautiful CUBA."
