This is the last song he was able to play that night on Alan Bangs' "Night Flight" radio programme. Notes from the record:

John Cale in the BFBS Studios after his show at "Alter
Wartesaal", Cologne, where he played a concert with his band. It`s
interview with Alan Bangs, a well known Moderator in Germany. Sometimes
Alan asked John to play a song on the piano in that studio room. John
Cale played its songs in an intensity not belonged up to then ever. He
is to cries and screaming and had a crying fit. He had nearly a nervous
breakdown and you hear some silence after the songs before Alan Bangs
find the words to go on with the interview. After Waiting for my man
Alan stopped the whole thing, because John Cale was really finished and
it was not possible to go on with this radio show, thanks to Alan Bangs
for his feeling in this situation. I saw the show with his band earlier
that evening and I was wondering about what happened on the stage.
Sometimes John Cale lay under his piano rolled like an embryo and cries
like a wounded animal. It was a really special show this evening, but I
never expected what happened later at the BFBS Studios, an emotional and
damageable man plays piano and sings his songs. I think, the right words
are: An emotional character with sensitive feelings at the end of its
strength. I want to write more about this evening and all the
feelings, but my English is too bad, so take this what I write here. A
long time I`m thinking about this show, should I seed this with or
without the interview, I decided to give to you the whole show so that
you understand what happened this evening.

  • Jesus, this is just about his lowest ebb. Crying on stage huh. In 1984 as well, very literary.
