Noosphere, according to the idea of Vladimir Vernadsky and Teilhard de Chardin (1922), who together with Édouard Le Roy was listening the lectures of Vladimir Vernadsky at Sorbonne, denotes the "sphere of human thought". The word is derived from the Greek νοῦς (nous "mind") + σφαῖρα (sphaira "sphere"), in analogy to "atmosphere" and "biosphere".
In the original theory of Vernadsky, the noosphere is the third in a succession of phases of development of the Earth, after the geosphere (inanimate matter) and the biosphere (biological life). Just as the emergence of life fundamentally transformed the geosphere, the emergence of human cognition fundamentally transforms the biosphere. In contrast to the conceptions of the Gaia theorists, or the promoters of cyberspace, Vernadsky's noosphere emerges at the point where humankind, through the mastery of nuclear processes, begins to create resources through the transmutation of elements. It is also currently being researched as part of the Princeton Global Consciousness Project.
The project derived from my research concerning Chernobyl. If we appeal to the recent history, we could recall that the world was informed about the Chernobyl catastrophe by the Sweden radiology services as the wind had brought the radioactive clouds to Scandinavia. In this sadly known day of April 26, 1996 personally I was moving at the same direction, simultaneously with those clouds on my way to the exhibition in one Baltic country. Few days later the Sweden alarm has woken up the entire world.
"Virtual Noosphere" project is a sound/video installation generated out from climate data got in real-time from NASA server, where images and extreme rain events animation showing changes was scanned, with the help of a series of networked computers forming a single recursive system. This is an environmental arts project, exploring the artistic potential of scientific data to raise awareness and bring understanding on climate change, using new media.
To use the arts as a catalyst to engage the imagination of people in exploring climate change, enabling them to develop understanding of the issue. To assist the people in order to better understand the ecological bond between the local places and the wider world and encourage the practice of active citizenship in relation to environmental concerns.
The project communicates a synthesis of art and science research, investigations, ideas, factual and creative responses to the issues identified through the exploration of the data. This work explores and challenge social, political and industrial practices that potentially contribute to climate change. As soon as a work could take a number of forms, re-working of raw data to create different scenarios my proposal to show an installation using Imagine Software.
The project researches the distance between the notions of local and global. The piece is dealing with climate, memory, catastrophe, worldwide coverage, mobile telecommunication and responsibility. In my project I'm questioning: - does the mobility mean the choice? Does forecast mean survival? The recent Asian catastrophe is an example. Could invisible become visible with the help of digital technologies?
