This has been Coentrao's breakthrough season at both club and international level. Normally a midfielder, he has starred at left-back in Benfica's double winning season.

His performances have been so impressive that he has put himself in line to start at left-back at the World Cup.

A graduate of the Under-21 side, he only made his full international debut in the play-off victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina in November.

New Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho reportedly distanced himself from a summer move for Coentrao, saying Brazil's Marcelo already operates in his position at the Bernabeu, but he may still leave Benfica with Roma another potential destination.

He began his career at Rio Ave and moved to Benfica in 2007, before spending loan spells at Nacional, Spain's Real Zaragoza and then back at old club Rio Ave.

At the start of this season he made the left-wing back spot his own and dazzled in the Portuguese Liga and the Europa League.

He was given his first start for Portugal in the hugely disappointing 0-0 draw in the Cape Verde Islands, but was one of the few players to impress, combining well with Nani down the left side.

Fábio Coentrão said that if he was on Benfica, he only could be transfer to one club: Real Madrid. I think that´s correct, because the two biggest teams in Portugal and Spain are S. L. Benfica and Real Madrid C. F.
