  • @lastrada52 I agree entirely with your comments about others saying she is ugly, in two senses. First, as you note there is the unadulterated youth of her as a young woman as captured in the photograph by Mapplethorpe. But there is also the beauty that is more subtle and that endures today. I don't believe she's worn a bit of make up in a decade and her face does show her age, but that's not the point. She has an energy and beauty that transcends time.

  • beauty

  • @84ccipollini I agree. I was fortunate to hear her perform this live in Seattle this year. Magnificent. Patti and acoustic guitar. You don't need anything more.

  • And all must love the human form,

    In heathen, Turk, or Jew.

Where Mercy, Love, and Pity dwell,

    There God is dwelling too.

  • To Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love, All pray in their distress, And to these virtues of delight Return their thankfulness. For Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love, Is God our Father dear; And Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love, Is man, His child and care. For Mercy has a human heart; Pity, a human face; And Love, the human form divine: And Peace the human dress. Then every man, of every clime, That prays in his distress, Prays to the human form divine: Love, Mercy, Pity, Peace. that what Blake did write
  • What an amazing song. Thanks Patti.

  • I recently saw Patti performing Blakean Year at Flea's Silverlake Benefit Dinner in LA on March 15th, she was incredible! I also saw her play live with the Chilis at Earls Court in 2006. Two shows I'll never forget.

  • i dont tinc patti gives a fying f about her looks....

  • An earlier post had comments about Patti Smith being ugly. Look at that Mapplethorpe photograph on her 1st album above. That -- as she herself described recently -- "Frank Sinatra coat over the shoulder pose" -- how cool is that? She's beautiful. Her importance as a singer, performer & writer can not be under-estimated. "People Have the Power" is Patti's "Imagine." It resonates still -- all these years later. A rock singer sings about Blake? Are you kidding? Only Patti could get away with it.

  • good song :) thanks patti! :)

  • I remember having a couple of months in which I was very influenced by Blake, which makes me like this song even more.
