  • My co-worker was originally from Jamaica and she made this for breakfast for us the other day. It was so good! And there are so many ways to be creative with this simple and delicious dish. Thanks for sharing! Also, using coconut oil for the johnny cakes sounds really good. I may have to pick some up the next time I go to the grocery store. :)

  • @threewhitetears You are so right. From this basic recipe a lot of dishes can be created. Try using crab meat (Instead of Codfish) for example.

  • Interesting thought about growing an Ackee tree in the backyard. One would have to sneak a seed (or two) into the country and what about the climate in Virginia? Thanks for your kind comments.

  • why do you call it johnny cake? it's fried dumplin.....

  • Fried dumpling is called "Johnny cake" in Jamaica

  • It is not that I could not defend myself, but I wanted to avoid confrontation. My Chinese-Jamaican defender was, as I said, pure Jamaican! The other point I wanted to make is that Jamaicans (no matter their original heritage are always reluctant to put adjectives before the word Jamaican - That's pride!) As for the ackee. Yes, it is sold here at about $13 a can. I, too, have yet to try a lot of Jamaican foods, but I will. Yes. I love Jamaica!!!!

  • I am very impressed with the calming voice of the narrator & the filming presentation of the Caribbean cuisine in this series, for anyone that wants to inject some variety and simplicity to their meals, please follow the step by step instructions & turn the joy of cooking for the ones we love into a mouth-watering beautiful delight.

  • trelli28 you are right in jamaica we called it fried dumplin.. in the other island i think they call it johnny cake...

  • It's called Johnny Cakes or fried dumpling. I'm Jamaican, born and raised there as well. Johnny cakes is an old name. I first heard it when I was about 9 years old and the company where my dad worked(Fidco in spanish town) made the most delicious fried dumplings I ever tasted, but they were stuffed with callaloo & saltfish. They called them Johnny Cakes and my mother confirmed that it was the right name.

  • Dnt have to. If u have one jamaican bone in u you wud knw it.

  • And you went to all 14 parishes and ask .. ''do you call it johnny cakes''?
