Since 1996 the EU has operated a trademark system, whereby individuals, manufacturers and service e providers can make a single application for a trademark to be registered in all Member States of the Union. A trademark fulfils the three essential functions: it identifies the origin of goods and services; it guarantees consistent quality through evidence of the company's commitment to the consumer; and it's a form of communication and a basis for publicity and advertising. Trademarks also play an important role in promoting business innovation and quality. This week the EPP Group has held a hearing to examine the future of the EU trademark system ahead of anticipated Commission proposals to revise it.
