I'll never forget seeing Hvorostovsky sing this a decade ago. Just stunning. The baritone may not get the girl here, but he does get the best aria!

Actually she does. Liza commits suicide by jumping into the Neva. She's definitely one of the most foolish characters in all of opera. And Yeletsky is one of the most eligible bachelors in all of opera. And sung by Hvorostovsky...indeed he's perfection.
