Title: "Homelessness & Poverty Awareness Project (Teaching Civic Responsibility and Engagement)"
Teachers: Jennie Griffith & Mollie Peterson
Overview: Students analyzed a community action plan to eliminate poverty and homelessness in their region, and then research other cities and counties across the country to see what others were doing to combat these issues. Ultimately, using their findings, students created their own manageable plan to present to City Council based on their analysis. In addition, using Word and PowerPoint, they had to create marketing plans to share with peers and their community, which ranged from the creation of informative websites, brochures and posters to a "live" window display depicting homelessness and how people can get involved. Upon completion of the project, students were invited to speak to the Charlotte City Council and mayor to present their findings.
Significant Results/Learnings: In addition to learning the joy of helping others, students learn valuable cooperation and collaboration skills, leadership skills and civic awareness. The research and product development skills they developed will carry over to their future careers.
