This is how a print head from a Dimension BST 768 looks and operates.

If you look closely you can see gears on both sides spin which pushes the wire into the 518 degree Fahrenheit extrusion tips.

This is basically like a scaled down version of a hot glue gun. Instead of melting glue and extruding blobs of glue it melts 70 thousands of an inch diameter wire and extrudes 10 thousands of an inch diameter ABS plastic.
