I'm making this video to show that different brands of tube testers can test the exact same tube differently. All three are emissions, and know to be good. The three testers are as follows: EMC model 213, Superior TV-11, and a B&K model 606.

  • I read that putting tubes in the freezer strengthens them; is this true?

  • @AloneAndOld

No, it makes no difference. That's just audiophoolery. Once tubes get a lot of use and wear, there isn't any way to improve them. Unless it's low emission on the older tubes that used thoriated tungsten filaments. Those could be slightly over volted to burn off the top layer of the filament to improve emission. But, that was early tubes only, as far as I know.

  • Is this due to a calibration problem or bad caps perhaps?

  • No, even after recapping these, they all read roughly the same still.

The B&K 606 has left me and back with its original owner now. Once the weather gets better, I will do another video like this with my newly acquired mint Simpson 1000 tube tester.

  • great idea!

I usually don't condemn a tube unless it is dead. I just got the tubes today for my old Philco. I did not test them yet. I'm gonna wait til I get the caps. I noticed that the 5Y3 check in the ? sometimes. Just think if they made digital tube testers with modern technology, they'd analize a tube for more accurately.

  • Neither do I. I only throw tubes away if there's a defect like broken glass. I've seen a couple digital tube testers online, but I think that they would have the same shortcomings as an antique tester. They could test certain tubes better, but who knows.

  • Hello! Are there any copies available of the chart on the roll guide of the Superior TV-11. The one one mine is missing. djrgary@yahoo.com

  • Did you have them all calibrated?

  • @TheVintageAttic - I've heard of slightly overvolting the 6L6 "Tuning Eye" tubes in order to brighten them up enough to keep using them. I had an old Magnavox radio from the early fifties; my grandmother gave it to me so she would'nt have to pay VA taxes on it anymore and it was enormous! I almost got it working, except for what looked like a round, white ceramic piece with a round metal strip embedded in it that had cracked.

  • Very nice comparison. Very nice tube testers too.

  • seems like the first 2 testers have approx. the same reading when looking not at the numbers but at the % of full scale.

  • Not yet. In a couple months, I'll start playing with it and figure out how to calibrate it properly. It's alsmost spot on at the moment though.
