I think both Brown and Reed were aliases. It was mentioned that he changed his name numerous times, and he changed Austin and Billie's names too. The only thing we know for sure is that his first name was Curtis.

Brown was Curtis' real last name. He began using Reed after he tooks Billie and Austin and left Kate.

Hey do you...or anyone else...happen to have the episode where Marlena's car breaks down and then Roman, who's driving by happens to pick her up and they share a warm moment after he drops her off at the penthouse(they had been separated because of the Belle paternity issue) it was around this time. that would be good to see if anyone happens to have it thanks.

Reed had to also be an alias or Kate might actually have guessed that Billie and Austin could be her's...i mean she knows there last name. Perhaps Brown was the name Kate knew him by? I can't remember that part for sure.
I feel terrible for Billie. I can very easily see why she doesn't want to believe Kate could be her mother.

Stefano killed Curtis. my memory is a bit sketchy but i believe curtis was using the last name brown to remain incognito with his shady business dealings since he was working with/for stefano. curtis' real last name is reed.

And how come both her and Austin are called Reed and not Brown??

In this clip are the only scenes in which I don't like seeing Laura gloat --- because now it's at Austin and Billie's expense, too.
