This is the final animation for the entry to the VFS-Youtube Scholarship Competition,
I am responsible for the animation part, including Modeling, Texturing, Animation and Rendering. Music and Sound are sponsored by Skyhigh Creative Partners.

The Whole animation is generated from the 3D animation software package and the cel-shaded look is one of my final goal that I would like to achieve.

Thank you for watching.

  • Dear all supporter of this animation. First of all, thank you for your comments and supportive manner.

Unfortunately this animation didn't make it into top 10 or top 20. Personally I really feel disappointed as my work didn't recongized a spot in the competition.

For competition details, please search Vancouver Film School in Youtube.

I am 29 now and after this competition, I will just deeply consider about my career. as I wonder why my work-hardship can't have proper reward.

  • if you are gonna let this one failure stop you, then good, give up. Really, you should be thinking about your next project. For example, I recently made an animation for a channel frederator contest and a video for VFS, both not making the cut. But you know what? That's not going to stop me from finishing an animated film I'm going to premiere at my city's film festival at the end of this month. Never give up, if you truly love what you do. Peace brother.

  • It is about life and value. Sometimes learn from the experience, currently I feel that I was robbed, and may feel how stupid I am(why not taking film). I have to support myself and there's a limitation for animation creation...this is the reality that I have to face. May be deeply consideration is about changing directions, I don't know either.

  • Do you have the skills for video game animation? That is creative work. It is also an industry that is experiencing a lot of growth, and probably pays well.

  • Well I can only say that I love to see cinematic cut scenes in the video games. Personally I would like to treat this competition as a springboard, One hand I would like to train my skills and the other hand is seek opportunity to working aboard as in HK, I don't feel that I have a good prospectus to be an animator. I would like to make people feel shock and amazing when they saw my animation. But in HK, this industry is just too "mono-tongue".

  • this is beautiful! I love the animation style... It's like Scanner Darkly meets Airplane Safety Manuals. It is really wonderful. I love it.

Check out mine if you get a chance...

  • Thanks, actually I would like to do 3D animation in a special way, (not just for photorealistic). Yep, it is similar as "Animatrix"

Well about this competition, it is something like comparing "apple" to "orange" and because we work on different category, It is hard to compare. Well lets become one of the 10 finalists first!!!

  • This is beautiful...you were very real. Touching.^_^

  • don't really like the animation but love really much the story...!!!!!!!

  • I really like your video mahingshun. I think you did a great job. I like the animation.

    + ***** !

  • You can always make art in your spare time, too!

Here is something that could be worth thinking about later:

I would like to see what happens next to the young man in this clip! Where is he going? Will he make it back home? Will he leave his art dreams behind? It could make a good story!

p.s. also, it could be a little brighter b/c the resolution is a little dark IMHO.

    Peace

  • mahingshun,

I think you should do what makes you happiest. I understand that you are upset that you weren't recognized, but consider this - some of the greatest artists of all time were never recognized. Vincent Van Goh died without any recognition, Philip K. Dick wasn't recongnized enough until after he died, Franz Kafka too.

So I understand you need to make a living, but if making art truly makes you happy, then you shouldn't do it for rewards. Also, maybe you're just ahead of your time? =)

  • good job..i luv ur work.keep up

  • Quite beautiful work. I like the style.

  • reading your comments, mahingsun, dont worry about it. you can have fun doing alot of things. one of the happiest guys i know writes poems in books that nobody's ever heard of (he acknowledges this), draws pictures, and makes stereos for a living, never making much money, but happy. Whatever you want to do, you can make it work.
