Why was this section of the M6 built on stilts rather than being at "ground" level?

@lotuspoint It was built on stilts because there are two separate railway tracks going in different directions in the area, plus a water treatment Plant at the time, now all gone, and finally the river Tame runs through the area. So back in the late 60's there was a lot of activity going on at ground level, hence the need to raise the road carriageway above the ground. Spaghetti junction was another in a similar situation.

Yes it's a real mega busy stretch, grinds to a halt most week days in rush hour...
