In many American minds this is Kazakhstan (video).
I am going to show you the real Kazakhstan with its history, culture, great nature, and amazing architecture.
Kazakhstan is a country in the heart of Eurasia. It's bordered by Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. It's the ninth largest territory in the world and the world's largest landlocked country with many different types of nature. Kazakhstan has a vast flat steppe extending from the Volga in the west to the Altai Mountains in the east and from the plains of western Siberia in the north to oases and deserts of Central Asia in the south.
Kazakhstan's history goes back thousands of years; I will give you a brief overview.
The indigenous Kazakhs were a nomadic Turkic people who belonged to several divisions of Kazakh hordes. Their tribes fell under Mongol rule in the 13th century and they were dominated by Tartar khanates until the area was conquered by Russia in the 18th century.
During the USSR Kazakhstan became agricultural and industrial center.
The Soviet Union built the largest space center in the world called Baikonur in Central Kazakhstan, where the first man in space Yuri Gagarin was launched from.
Kazakhstan obtained its independence from the collapsing Soviet Union in 1991 and proclaimed its membership in the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Now that you have gotten a brief history of Kazakhstan, let us move on to its interesting and rich culture.
As nomads Kazakhs lived in yurts, the portable, felt-covered, wood lattice-framed domes. This made it easy for them to pack up and move to the next grassland with their pasture. Many Kazakhs are still living the way they lived a thousand years ago, though, many have adopted the modern technology with things such as solar panels, air conditioners, satellites and so on.
The nomads' pasture consisted of horses and sheep, animals that are easily moved. This is why Kazakh's diet and dishes were based on horse and sheep milk and meat.
Music is very important in Kazakh society. Their main musical instrument is a Dombra, a two stringed instrument, which is used by most of the Kazakhs and is still used in modern popular music. (VIDEO)
Religion plays an important role in the everyday life of many Kazakhs. Although Kazakhstan has freedom of religion, this country is regarded as an Islamic country. 70% of Kazakhstan is Sunni Muslim with the rest being mostly Orthodox Christian and atheists.
Kazakhstan is also a very wealthy country with many ancient structures alongside with modern architectural marvels.
Starting with the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, which was built in 1405, and the ancient city of Turkestan, Kazakhstan developed into a modern nation with new architecture and modern lifestyle. Today's new capital of Kazakhstan Astana is one of the newest cities in the world with amazing different styles of architecture. Astana is undergoing a transformation costing billions of dollars, where top international architects assist in trying to make Astana a worthy capital - not only of Kazakhstan but also of all Central Asia. (VIDEO)
As you can see, the real Kazakhstan is completely different from Borat's Kazakhstan.
After looking at its nature, culture, history and sights, I cannot understand why Kazakhstan is so poorly known in the world.
Borat definitely made a commercial for Kazakhstan and made it more famous, but he gave a wrong idea about it.
Real Kazakhstan is a multicultural country where different nationalities live together peacefully. The people of Kazakhstan are always warm and welcoming.
