Niagara Falls gang member charged in murder

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) - A Niagara Falls teenager accused of gunning down a woman in broad daylight faced a judge on Monday.
Without a weapon or an actual witness to the crime police were able to build their case against an 18-year old suspected gang member.
DeQuana M. White walked into city court Monday morning and pleaded not guilty to murder in the second degree. Police say he shot and killed 35 year old Dorothy Banks near the 1300 block of Ashland Avenue.
"We have a witness that, well several witnesses, who said they saw the suspect get into the victim's vehicle just prior to the shooting," said Niagara Falls Detective Captain Ernest Palmer.
It appears to be a drug deal gone bad. He describes White as a teenager with robbery and burglary convictions and Banks as a known prostitute.
"It was one of the toughest cases we worked in a while because of the magnitude of the people who needed to be interviewed," said Palmer, "And putting together a good case."
The case started coming together when police raided a home in the 1500 block of Pierce Avenue. They seized guns, drugs and cash. Palmer says it is a hangout spot for The Bloods, a local gang.
"I would say with some certainty that Mr. White is a member of the Bloods and a number of people we took out of that house on Friday night were also members of the Bloods as well," said Palmer.
Police say tips they received from gang members and information they received from their own gang intelligence unit led authorities led them to White. Sunday morning they moved in on their suspect at a Hospitality In on Niagara Falls Boulevard.
"We did have some information that he may still be armed," said Palmer. "So we waited until the vehicle pulled out. We took him down with a couple of vehicles and installed spike strips. We took him at gunpoint, took him out of the vehicle."
White is being held without bail. He also pleaded not guilty to an unrelated shooting and we'll have much more about that on News 4 at 5. He's expected to appear next week in court for a preliminary hearing.
