I'll try & explain 2 u how it went as plaintly as i can: during the early 20th century (1900-1920), jewish organizations pushed for tha bafour declaration. when closing in on mid century the british showed signs of backing out because they couldn't get any agreement with the arabs. by then (1940-1948) there were 100's of thousands of zionists.

The palestinian declined any offer the british gave them for land. First, they were offered Jordan in its entirety. They declined. After that they were offered a partition of israel 50-50. After that the arabs declined a partition that gave jews LESS THAN 20% and arabs more than 80% of Israel and they still declined.The arabs wouldn't settle for anything, simple as that.

Lets not forget the ~8 attempts post 1948 to give palestinians the west bank & gaza. They still declined.
