Angela Lansbury & Len Cariou reprise their original Sweeney Todd roles for Stephen Sondheim's 75th Birthday benefit concert. Some minor flubbing, and Len Cariou does not have the voice he once had, but an absolutely charming performance.
July 8, 2005 at the Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles
A benefit concert for Children Will Listen, a program of the ASCAP Foundation.

Sweeney Todd is my favourite musical and I wouldn't be able to compare it's stage versions with the movies (yes, I do count the ones that are not musicals). I just love the story, and enjoy every song... and I have yet to see a performance that I don't like of them.

It was wonderful to watch Lansbury singing A little priest again after so many years and doing it as good - if not better - as the first time on the stage.

    Thanks for the video.

I understand that you're trying to differentiate between the actress, but you must acknowledge Angela Lansbury's long and successful movie career. She earned an Oscar nomination for her performance in Gaslight at age 17. She went on to perform in numerous movies, including the original Manchurian Candidate. Simply being a successful stage actor does not disqualify one from performing well on screen. However, lately it does seem to disqualify one from being cast on screen.

George Hearn was a great Sweeney, but I wish it was Len here who was in the 1982 TV recording. Or at least that they had made another one with him instead. I always thought it was too bad that I was never able to actually watch him playing the role. I've just got to cling to my soundtrack like mad I guess.

I feel like Sweeney Todd is kind of the biggest ham ever. But that's just how I see it, I guess.

I personally prefered Michael Ball to Hearn. But I can't really name a bad stage Sweeney that I've watched

Seriously. Not that HBC was my preferred Mrs. Lovett, but acting and singing for the camera is totally different from acting and singing for the stage. You can't really compare the two, it's like apples and oranges.
