You should not harvest at all the first year. Year two you can harvest for a few weeks early. Year 3 and beyond harvest until the spears get thinner and thinner. Once they are the size of a pencil you can leave them to become a fern and make energy for next years.

I thought you were supposed to let them grow for 2 years before harvesting, then cutting up the branches (which look identical to the initial stalk)

@MegaJim79 Wait until the ferns get frosted and at least start to turn brown before removing them. Remove the ferns because you could well have some asparagus beetle eggs on the ferns and take them to the dump.

my asparagus is in their first year and have 3 feet high ferns....first frost is in a month from now. As I understand it...I must cut away the ferns...leaving 2 inches of stems above ground.
