The DARPA Autonomous Robotic Manipulation (ARM) program is developing software that enables robots, given only high-level direction, to autonomously grasp, manipulate and perform complex tasks in unstructured environments. At the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, an ARM robot known as "Robbie" has been playing games with curious and intrigued visitors. The exhibit teaches visitors about how robotics can impact society and encourages young people to pursue careers in science and engineering. DARPA is also offering the public the opportunity to develop and test code to perform tasks in the robot simulator, then upload that code to an actual robot and watch it execute the task in real-time via the web.

  • Autonomous Robotic Manipulation program, ARM, really guys? You've gotta stop this, it's becoming ridiculous. Does everything have to have a cutesy acronym?

  • I name it, RO-BO-BO-BO

  • show it picking a lock and i'll be impressed

  • SKYNET has been activated.

  • It's all fun and games until that keyhole becomes your eye socket.

  • Send the robots in before the troops

  • Totally awesome autonomous robot!

  • plants**

  • @depro9 Only someone who has never built robots themselves would make that statement. You are talking about swarm robotics, SLAM, autonomous behavior, long range data telemetry, chassis to deal with a complex terrain as well as some algorithm to differentiate plans. Each of those of a formidable problem on their own. Together, don't expect this to happen for another 20 years.

  • Hey Darpa, I don't really dig you cats but I know you could pull this one off. Build a small autonomous robot that weeds fields for farmers. It would be an ARMY of cheap little robots thats sole goal is to keep the fields free of weeds. The bots would seek & destroy any plant that should not be in the field. THIS SHOULD BE REALLY REALLY EASY TO MAKE HAPPEN!
