We are at a crossroads for the future of public education and really for the future of our entire state. On March 4th, we saw massive statewide protests to say that the state budget cuts must stop, our schools and other essential services cannot take more drastic hits. The state budget cuts have decimated our schools, colleges and social programs that serve the neediest Californians. More than $17 billion in cuts to education over the last two years will deny a generation of students the quality education they deserve. More than 16,000 educators lost their jobs last year and thousands more will get pink slips by March 15 of this year. When the state is slashing billions from public education, cutting health care for poor children, and raising college fees, corporations and oil companies should not be getting tax breaks. The entire California Education Coalition supported this demonstration ~ It was a day for all of us parents, administrators, school board members, college faculty, education support professionals and teachers to be united against the state budget cuts that are destroying the future for a generation of students. And lets stand up for the California we all want. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable. Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals. " Justice is only achieved through the solidarity of people of good intentions working together. Our solidarity as educators and as a union is our strength. Our intentions are more than good protecting the quality of our schools in our communities is vital to rebuilding the strength of our cities and our battered economy. (Video: Seth Bramble)
