Brilliant, but that doesn't explain how the images suddenly changed while the discs were spinning, like when the revolving acorn suddenly sprouts into a tree. They must have stopped the disc and changed it to achieve that...

All the animation was created in camera. The bit with the acorn growing into a tree was created by having a series of discs with various different stages of the acorn growth on, and we would cut between them. Each disc had 16 frames on, and in order to overlap between the animations (to make it run smoothly) each new disc would progress by 8 frames. The acorn-tree bit was one of the real ball-aches of the project, but worth it.
